Conquering the Elements: Three of the “Most Challenging” Trail Spots

  1. Catoctin Mountain Extended Loop Trail- Thurmont, MD

This challenging hiking and running trail promises a heart-racing workout for a large majority of athletes. With scenery as unforgiving as it is breathtaking, the Catoctin Mountain Extended Loop Trail offers 8.9 miles of gorgeous trails for hiking or most popularly, trail running.

This loop is located near Thurmont, Maryland. Based on reviews, it is a difficult trail for most, taking around 4 hours and 19 minutes to complete. Along the route, there are many rocky areas which increase the difficulty level. However, the trail is well worth the effort, as there are magnificent views of the cliffs, Chimney Rock, and Thurmont Vista.

The loop is composed of all three major loops in the Catoctin Mountain Park, including Cunningham Falls, Hog Rock, Blue Ridge Summit, Thurmont Vista, Wolf Rock, and Chimney Rock.

  1. Ricketts Glenn Falls Loop- Sweet Valley, PA

Ricketts Glenn Falls Loop is a 6.3 mile loop near Sweet Valley, PA and takes on average, 2 hours and 53 minutes to complete.

This trail is popular for trail running and hiking, with 5 star reviews in regards to its gorgeous scenery. It is even known for having one of the best waterfall views in the eastern United States. This loop includes 21 named waterfalls with the tallest one being 94’ Ganoga Falls. Despite the gorgeous views, it is recognized as the “Most Difficult” loop in the park.

  1. Massanutten Ridge- McGaheysville, Virginia

This hike located in McGaheysville, Virginia runs along one side of the ridgeline, guiding hikers southwest of Massanutten mountain. This trail is a 5.5 mile out-and-back hike with 928 feet of elevation, taking an average of 3 hours to complete.

The first mile is easygoing, but picks up quickly. It can be described as hiking mountain after mountain with no end, but is an amazing workout that leads to an even better view.

The views are at their peak from late fall into early spring because the bare trees allow for seamless, uninterrupted visibility across the Massanutten Resort to the east and Harrisonburg to the west.

In addition, upon reaching the top of the mountain, there will be a sign mapping out the different visible views including the Allegheny Mountains and James Madison University.
